Summer Drama CampsTSIN 2005

The Drama Enrichment Program (DEP) of the Reg Lenna Civic Center has announced its summer schedule offering classes for young people from 5 to adults. Classes for Summer 2013 include: Kids Camp with 3 two-week sessions for children in grades one through six, a major film project for all ages and a three week Musical Theater session for students in high school through college.

Kids’ Camp students learn theater terms and theater games, improvisation, costuming, set construction and create their very own play which they produce on the Friday of their session for family and friends. Children can Keith and Emily  participate in one or all three of the 9:00 to 5:00 sessions. These sessions will take place at the former Holy Family School on North Main St. The cost is $200 per two week session.  Early drop off of 8:30 and late pickup of 5:30 is available for working parents. Sibling discounts are available. Registrations for these sessions should be made before June 15th to avoid a $25 late fee.

More serious theatrical training is provided in the major film project session of afternoon and evening classes with additional filming for some scenes on Saturdays (July 8– JuJan and Mikyung work with LaShawna Hunterly 26) for people of all ages. Some younger children and adults will be needed for leading roles in the feature film. Students in this session learn acting techniques and then film an original screenplay written by program director, Michele Constantino, “They Speak in Numbers”, a thriller about partisans and spies in war time Berlin and their efforts to save Jews from the fury of Adolf Hitler.

Another very popular class is Singers’ Intensive (formerly Musical Theater). Students in high school through college learn proper vocal techniques and performance skills in this three week course from July 22nd  through August 10th.   Entrance into this program is by audition only. Auditions are by reservation only and scheduled for Saturday, June 15th. There is housing available for oDEP Orphansut of town students. Singers’ Intensive features staging by Ms. Constantino and critique and diagnostics from Broadway stars, Keith Buterbaugh and Jan Horvath, who will be in residence for two of the three weeks. Mr. Buterbaugh and Ms. Horvath work with students individually in private sessions in the evening and group sessions during the afternoons. Buterbaugh’s impressive credentials in the title role of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom on Broadway, leading roles in National touring shows and White House appearances, performances throughout the U.S and Europe with world renowned symphonies and recent runs in Tony Award winning Company and Sweeney Todd  have prepared him well for his work with the young people under his tutelage. Ms. Horvath comes with impressive credentials such as the roles of Christine and Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera. Other Broadway credits include The Threepenny Opera starring Sting, Sweet Charity directed by Bob Fosse, Oliver! and Stardust. In the National Touring Company of Cats,  Jan played the leading role of Grizabella.

International concert pianist, Mikyung Kim from New York will act as the accompanist and assistant musical director with Jon Wilder as musical director of his professional band. They will accompany the two Broadway performers, Ms. Constantino, and the musical theater students in a main stage production at the Reg Lenna Theater on August 10th at 7:00 PM.

The Drama Enrichment Program is in its twelfth year under award winning director Michele Constantino. The program has grown from a core of 18 young high school actors in one summer session to almost 100 students from the ages of 6 to 25 in workshop situations from summer through the Christmas Season.

All programs are under the supervision of Ms. Constantino, who achieved her regional reputation for the excellence of her production and direction skills with the Jamestown High School Musical at the Reg Lenna Civic Center. Ms. Constantino and the JHS Musical received recognition from the Shea’s Performing Arts Center for excellence in Costume and Set Design for the JHS Musical Forty-Second Street. She has also been heavily involved in production activities of the Tino Productions Dinner Theater, and the Chautauqua Opera.  Before settling in the area, Ms. Constantino was a performer for the international touring show group “Collage” which toured the Eastern US and Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Paradise Island, Grand Bahamas.

All Drama Enrichment Program classes are tuition based and have a limited enrollment.  There are some need-based scholarships available. Information on the Drama Enrichment Program can be found on their website at http://www.depjamestown.com or by contacting Michele Constantino at 716-763-2034.  Anyone wishing to become a patron or a program advertiser should also contact Ms. Constantino. The Drama Enrichment Program is supported in part by grants from the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
